Worship
We meet for worship every week on Sunday evenings at 5:00pm.
Where we meet
110 N. Elliott Road, Chapel Hill, NC (in the main sanctuary of the Church of Reconciliation). There is accessible parking close to the sanctuary building.
What happens in the worship service?
In worship we orient ourselves to God’s loving presence and call, recommit to following Jesus, and are empowered by the Spirit to live with compassion and joy.
We gather to hear readings from the Bible, to sing (often from the Mennonite Voices Together hymnal), have a story for children and a sermon. We always make space during each service for anyone to reflect on scripture or how they’ve sensed the Spirit moving in our time together. We share our joys and hardships and pray for one another. We regularly celebrate communion. And we always have a snack after worship and sometimes a community potluck meal!
Who participates in worship?
Lots of people are involved every Sunday! We take seriously the idea of the “priesthood of all believers” — that God fills each of us with gifts to offer in the life of the community. We rotate leading prayers, music, working with children, greeting and bringing snacks, and preaching.
What about kids in worship?
We are an intergenerational congregation and celebrate the presence of kids of all ages! We offer childcare for infants through Pre-K during the service and encourage families to participate in worship alongside their kids. And during the school year we have regular Sunday school classes before worship at 4pm.
What are sermons like?
Preaching emerges from engagement with the Bible (often following the cycle of scripture passages from the Revised Common Lectionary). We listen for and proclaim the good news of God to one another in worship.
